German railroad strikes spread

BERLIN, Germany (AP) -- German train drivers launched a strike on the country's passenger network Thursday, following freight train drivers off the job as their union turned up the pressure on the national railway in a bitter pay dispute.

German railroads came to a halt Thursday as passenger drivers came out on strike.

The GDL union called passenger train drivers out on strike at 2 a.m. (0100GMT) for a walkout that was set to last 48 hours.

Freight train drivers started their strike at midday Wednesday. Railway operator Deutsche Bahn AG said that only one in 10 regional trains was running in eastern Germany, where GDL is strongest. However, it said that two-thirds of its high-speed InterCityExpress trains were running normally.

The strike marks an escalation by GDL after it staged a 42-hour walkout against freight services last week, but left passenger trains running.
