Polar bear celebrates 1st birthday

from CNN

BERLIN, Germany (AP) -- Celebrity polar bear Knut -- who won the hearts of millions around the globe as a roly-poly orphan cub -- celebrated his first birthday Wednesday with a cake made from 300 eggs and 20 pounds of marzipan.

The Berlin Zoo pulled out all the stops to fete its star attraction, who has gone from a fluffy white powderpuff of a cub to a full-grown polar bear with a cheeky curiosity and a penchant for muddying his coat by rolling in the dirt.

His giant birthday cake contains 30 pounds each of flour and sugar. Children were given free entry to the zoo to help celebrate Knut's birthday, and proceeds from sales of slices of the cake will go toward the zoo's foundation, officials said.

But Knut -- no longer a tiny cub, thanks partly to his penchant for croissants -- probably won't get a taste of his own birthday cake. He may have weighed less than two pounds at birth but now tips the scale at more than 240 pounds, and has been on a diet since July.

Abandoned at birth, along with a twin brother who only survived a couple of days, Knut first attracted attention when Berlin's media picked up the story of his main caregiver camping out at the zoo to give the cub his bottle every two hours.

The story angered animal rights activists, who tried to sue the zoo for cruelty to animals by preventing nature from taking its course when the cub was rejected -- even if it cost him his life.

By that time, Knut was a three-month old white furball, with button eyes and his own fan club. He had been photographed dozens of times -- including for the cover of Vanity Fair -- and attracted thousands to the zoo.

Knut has generated more than $14 million for the zoo over the past year in with Knut toys, books and other trinkets, and drawing more than double the number of visitors.

Now that he is grown, the zoo does not have room to keep Knut permanently and are considering other offers from zoos in Europe, with an eye to finding him a mate, officials say.

Thomas Doerflein, who raised Knut by hand, cuddling him and playing with him in addition to feeding him from a bottle, told Germany's Bild newspaper on Wednesday that he hopes the bear will soon find a new home.

"A spacious enclosure. A female partner. At some point, Knut needs to leave me," Doerflein told the paper.

German railroad strikes spread

BERLIN, Germany (AP) -- German train drivers launched a strike on the country's passenger network Thursday, following freight train drivers off the job as their union turned up the pressure on the national railway in a bitter pay dispute.

German railroads came to a halt Thursday as passenger drivers came out on strike.

The GDL union called passenger train drivers out on strike at 2 a.m. (0100GMT) for a walkout that was set to last 48 hours.

Freight train drivers started their strike at midday Wednesday. Railway operator Deutsche Bahn AG said that only one in 10 regional trains was running in eastern Germany, where GDL is strongest. However, it said that two-thirds of its high-speed InterCityExpress trains were running normally.

The strike marks an escalation by GDL after it staged a 42-hour walkout against freight services last week, but left passenger trains running.

Construction starts on Nazi museum

From CNN

BERLIN, Germany (AP) -- The German government Friday started construction of an exhibition center at the site where the Gestapo, leaders of the SS and other top officials in Adolf Hitler's police state presided over Nazi-era crimes.

art.nazi.museum.ap.jpg

Work begins on the "Topography of Terror" exhibition center in Berlin.

The site "stands like no other place in Berlin for terror and genocide," Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit told reporters while marking the start of work. With the new center, he said, "one of the most important, authentic places of remembrance in Berlin will gain in stature."

The functional glass-and-metal structure, a single-story pavilion designed by German architect Ursula Wilms, will complete a memorial known as the "Topography of Terror" at what was one of the centers of Nazi power. It should be opened on May 8, 2010 -- the 65th anniversary of Nazi Germany's final surrender.

Visitors -- currently around 500,000 a year -- have been able to view an open-air exhibition in what remains of the Gestapo cellars, which were uncovered in the 1980s in what is now largely wasteland.

The Gestapo also had its prison at the headquarters.

Next door once stood the Hotel Prinz Albrecht, which housed the leadership of the SS, the Nazi party's dreaded paramilitary unit -- including Heinrich Himmler and Reinhard Heydrich -- and the Reich Security Main Office. Officials prepared the 1942 Wannsee Conference, where Nazi leaders formalized their plans for the Holocaust, at the site.

The SS acted as a special police force and was involved in some of the worst crimes committed in territory under Nazi control during World War II.

The remains of the damaged buildings were leveled after World War II. The site is in what was for decades a neglected corner of postwar West Berlin, right next to the Berlin Wall. It is still bordered by one of the wall's few remaining sections.

Wowereit said Wilms' design "is architecturally restrained and does not distract from the matter at hand."

The estimated $33 million cost of the new center will be shouldered by the German federal government and the city government.

Andreas Nachama, a former head of Berlin's Jewish community who leads the foundation overseeing the project, said that it would include a library and seminar rooms as well as the documentation center.

The site will now become "a worthy place of memory," said Wolfgang Boernsen, a lawmaker for Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats.

"We more than owe this to the victims of the Nazis' regime of terror, on whose fate decisions were made here."

The site is a few minutes' walk from the capital's Holocaust memorial, which opened two years ago. It is across the road from the one-time Nazi Aviation Ministry, which is now Germany's Finance Ministry.

56th International Filmfestival Mannheim-Heidelberg

Number Two after Berlin – 56th International Filmfestival Mannheim-
Heidelberg ends successfully

The 56th International Filmfestival Mannheim-Heidelberg ended this weekend awarding the Main Award of Mannheim-Heidelberg and several further prizes.

„With persistence and consistency the Newcomer festival has conquered the second position after the Filmfestival Berlin“, said Dr. Michael Kötz, festival director and artistic director since 15 years, at the closing press conference in Mannheim. This position is not surprising from an international perspective as for many years the festival has been listed as one of the 40 most important film festivals worldwide. Many comments from industry professionals and the media reveal that the

International Filmfestival Mannheim-Heidelberg is the second most important German film festival after the Berlinale. In particular the festival’s unique and consistent profile as a premieres’ festival of newcomer films has strengthend this position.....

During the festival , I was assigned to a urgent task.
Running german subtitle for international contest films.

At 1st, it was instead chaotic. Trying to set in the subtitle at the correct timing..
The whole picture was like, as if I was playing computer game.

Because of this job, I have watched more than 20 films. I must say some are good, some are beautiful , some makes you think, some challenge your senses, some reflected the truth...

Just like a paint pallet. You got a little of here and there in this wonderful filmfest.

I had an idea. I think lotsa people don't really have a chance to have a look at the cinema projector. Therefore, I took a series of pictures.

The film roll is bigger than what I imagined
